Gift Box Size Guide: Measuring for the Perfect Fit
The most common packaging mistake is ordering a box that is almost right. A product that swims in its box looks cheap; one that is squeezed looks careless and risks damage in transit. This guide walks through the measurements that matter, so your next order fits perfectly the first time.
How box dimensions are written
We always quote dimensions as Length x Width x Height (L x W x H), in inches or millimeters. Length is the longest side, width the shorter side of the opening, and height the depth. When we say a box is 8 x 6 x 3 in, that is the internal dimension - the usable space inside.
Internal dimensions are what matter for your product. External dimensions are always slightly larger because of the board thickness, which is why your packaging should be specified in internal size.
The golden rule: product + breathing room
Measure your product at its widest point, including any bulge, hang tag or protective wrap. Then add allowance:
- 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 in) on each side for a snug, premium fit
- 4-6 mm (0.16-0.24 in) for products with soft outer packaging
- 8-15 mm (0.3-0.6 in) if you plan foam or EVA inserts
- Extra height for tissue paper, ribbons or a thank-you card
Measure at least three samples from different batches. Products vary, and your box must fit the largest one comfortably.

Products with special shapes
- Bottles: measure the widest diameter and total height including cap; choose a box height at least 10 mm above the cap.
- Jewelry: insert depth should match product thickness - too deep and pieces rattle, too shallow and the lid presses on them.
- Food: leave headspace for moisture movement; never order a zero-allowance box for chocolate or baked goods.
- Multiple items: sketch the tray layout first, then calculate the outer tray footprint plus insert walls (usually 2-3 mm per divider).
